‘Paul Revere’s’ Ride

Paul Revere was extraordinary, yet, too much emphasis is placed on his  ride. Longfellow’s poem was responsible for this oversight of others involved on 4/18/1775–3 men and a woman who risked their lives as well.  Dr. Joseph Warren summoned Revere to ride along with Billy Dawes.  Dr. Sam Prescott  joined the two. They encountered the British. Dawes and Prescott made a daring escape. Only Prescott made it to Concord. There is believed to be another–Margaret Kemble-Gage–American wife of British Gen. Thomas Gage. On 4/18 an informant notified Warren of the British plan of march.  Warren swore he would never reveal the identity, but claimed this person was close to Gen. Gage.  Margaret’s diary reveals that her heart was torn between love for her husband and devotion to her countrymen. Margaret wasquickly sent to England, never to return to America.  It is suggested that upon her husband’s return to England, the couple lived separately.  Her life was spared, but her heart forever broken.
