Americans enjoy July 4th as a day to celebrate summer. Can we take a few moments from our cookouts and firework displays to acknowledge the significance of the signing of the Declaration of Independence? Might we reflect on the courage not only of the members of the Continental Congress — but also those on the battlefield who were charged with making this Declaration of Independence a reality. It would take eight grueling years and roughly 25,000 American casualties to make it happen.
Those in Congress were certainly not seeking power or recognition in July of 1776. They were keenly aware that a hangman’s noose could be their “reward.” This fact did not stop them from doing what was morally right in that moment. There was no one forcing their hands; no thought of fame, riches, or political advancement. (Such a far cry from the Congress of 2025 and ALL its members!)
As we honor and celebrate the extraordinary selflessness of the members of Congress in 1776, this author cannot help but wonder how this nation can revive the true Spirit of 1776 in the heart and soul of America. As I take time to reflect on the courage of our Founding Fathers and Mothers I realize how far 21st century Americans have wandered from the truths they held so dear — how our determination for the pursuit of personal happiness has clouded our understanding of maintaining a Republic. In considering this, I wonder if the great experiment they began will be celebrated at all in 2026 or if the apathy of 21st century America will witness the failure of their great experiment. Only a virtuous people can carry out what they intended. We are no longer that.
Below is a brief yet all-encompassing piece on the signers of the Declaration of Independence which I came across and recommend:
